Antabuse

Antabuse (disulfiram) is a potent drug intended for the treatment of alcoholism in people who did not respond to prior treatment. Antabuse is pregnancy category C – it passes into breast milk and can cause certain health effects in nursing infants, but it is not known for sure whether it can affect the health of an unborn baby. Women intending to take Antabuse and planning to get pregnant, or those who are already pregnant should discuss their options with a qualified professional to make sure their baby is safe. Do not ingest any amounts of alcohol during the treatment. In some rare cases patients taking Antabuse have reported the following serious side effects: weakness, severe diarrhea, vomiting, jaundice, dark urine, seizures, an allergic reaction (hives, trouble breathing, swelling), extreme tiredness, dizziness and loss of coordination. If you have some or any of these serious side effects stop taking this drug and inform your doctor about the episode as soon as possible.
